Attaining progressively the ranks listed below, from lowest to
highest, represents an ever increasing level of proficiency in the
martial arts. It is attained by frequent practice, not just in the dojo on
class nights, but outside in spare moments. Therein lies the secret
of building confidence - frequent practice.
Each belt curriculum consists of several main arenas:
- Self defense techniques - planned responses to common
attacks
- Forms (kata, if you must) - sequences of moves which teach
how to move between moves and develop flow of movement
- Sparring drills - to develop reaction time, fighting experience
and strategy, and endurance
- Physical conditioning - requirements increase with belt rank to
encourage regular exercise
